Take Better Pictures: Techniques from Street Photography with Steve Gilman
Overview
4 Thursdays 6-8pm, May 8-29
Ages 16 and up are welcome
Cost: $140
Bring whatever camera(s) you have; smartphones are fine!
Beginners and returners welcome!
Great photography isn’t just about the camera—it’s about how you see. This beginner-friendly class is for you if you enjoy photography and want to train your eye, refine your composition skills, and take more compelling photos, no matter what camera you use (yes, smartphones are welcome!).
This is not a technical class about settings, exposure, or f-stops. Instead, we’ll focus on how to see differently and capture stronger, more intentional images using techniques inspired by street photography.
Each week, we’ll explore composition methods that make photos more dynamic, engaging, and story-driven, such as:
Rule of Thirds
Frame in a Frame
Diminishing Perspective
Symmetry & Strong Shapes
Multiple Subjects
The Duck Blind
We’ll learn, shoot, and share—each week we'll learn a new technique, then students will go home and practice taking photos in the real world. When we come back together, we'll look at the photos we took and talk about them.
By the end of this class, you’ll not only take better pictures—you’ll see the world in a whole new way.
About the Instructor:
Steve Gilman is a seasoned photographer with a passion for capturing authentic moments. With a background in photography, theater, and marketing, Steve brings a unique perspective to visual storytelling.
For over 20 years, he has been an active street photographer, drawn to the art of candid and casual portraiture—finding beauty in everyday life and capturing people as they truly are. His approach is rooted in observation, patience, and the belief that the best photos happen when people forget the camera is there.
In this class, Steve will share insights from his decades of experience, helping students develop their eye for composition, timing, and the subtle nuances that bring images to life. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills, his hands-on, practical teaching style will help you build confidence behind the lens.
Class Cancellations and Absence
Refunds minus a $20 processing fee are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
